Russia Reports Record 1,214 Ukrainian Drones in Overnight Attack
(MENAFN) Russia said on Thursday that its air defenses intercepted and destroyed 1,214 Ukrainian drones targeting 20 regions overnight, surpassing the country’s previous record for a single attack.
The Russian Defense Ministry said the latest reported assault exceeded the previous high of 1,110 drones, which Moscow said were launched from Ukraine on Sept. 20.
"During the past night, air defense duty forces intercepted and destroyed 1,214 Ukrainian fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles," the ministry said in a statement.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that 613 drones targeted the capital region during the overnight operation, with most intercepted before reaching the city.
"Most of them were neutralized by Defense Ministry air defenses on distant approaches," he said on the Russian social media platform Max.
Sobyanin added that air defenses destroyed 231 drones as they approached Moscow.
Russia’s civil aviation authority, Rosaviatsia, temporarily suspended arrivals and departures at Moscow’s Vnukovo, Domodedovo and Zhukovsky airports “to ensure flight safety.” The restrictions were subsequently lifted.
A source in air traffic control services told a news agency that two aircraft traveling from Istanbul to Moscow reversed course mid-flight and returned to Istanbul because of restrictions at Vnukovo.
The report also said airport restrictions were introduced in 18 other Russian cities, highlighting the wider disruption caused by the reported drone assault.
Ukraine has not yet commented on the Russian claims. The reported scale of the attack and the interception figures could not be independently verified amid the ongoing conflict.
