El Salvador Sends Over 2,000 Troops to Haiti to Rescue 4 Captives
(MENAFN) El Salvador will send more than 2,000 soldiers into Haiti in a large-scale operation to recover four of its military aviation technicians, the country’s Foreign Ministry announced Wednesday.
In a statement, the ministry said President Nayib Bukele spoke by phone with Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime about the operation and about the ongoing presence of the Salvadoran mission in the Caribbean nation.
According to the statement, Bukele stressed that the rescue effort would be forceful and reaffirmed his country’s readiness to keep backing the fight against gangs in Haiti.
The Salvadoran leader also expressed gratitude to the Haitian public and to authorities, including local security forces, for their support and cooperation.
The four technicians went missing last week after an ambush in gang-controlled territory east of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Haiti has endured years of gang violence and political upheaval, which worsened after the 2021 assassination of President Jovenel Moise.
