Ship Ablaze in Strait of Hormuz as US-Iran Tensions Flare

Date:

(MENAFN) A vessel caught fire in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, roughly nine nautical miles north of Khasab, Oman, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) agency announced, setting off fresh alarm in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes.

The alert originated with the master of a third-party vessel, who told UKMTO he had seen another ship burning.

The fate of the crew is still unknown. At the time of the statement, no assessment of the damage or of any environmental impact had been issued.

UKMTO urged ships passing through the area to proceed with caution and to report any suspicious activity while authorities investigate the blaze.

The fire comes as friction between Iran and the US over navigation through the Strait of Hormuz intensifies. The waterway is a vital artery for global energy and commodity supplies.

The tensions trace back to February, when the US and Israel launched a war against Iran. Tehran retaliated with strikes on Israel and on US targets across the region. A ceasefire took hold in April.

In June, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. Implementation has since stalled over disputes about security in the strategic waterway, and tensions between the two sides continue to climb.
