Google’s Russian Unit Pays USD207.7M of Parent’s Fines as Debt Soars

Date:

(MENAFN) Google’s Russian subsidiary has covered nearly 16.8 billion rubles ($207.7 million) in penalties levied in Russia against its US parent, Google LLC, the unit’s bankruptcy trustee told a court hearing, Russian state media reported Thursday.

Valery Talyarovsky, the insolvency administrator overseeing the Russian entity, said more than 16.7 billion rubles ($206.5 million) had landed in the bank account of OOO Google as of Sept. 20, according to a state news agency.

Of that sum, roughly 14.7 billion rubles ($181.7 million) was debited by the Federal Bailiffs Service to settle fines against the parent company, Talyarovsky said.

Bailiffs also recovered more than 2.1 billion rubles ($26 million) from the subsidiary’s debtors under enforcement orders issued in its favor. Those funds went toward the US corporation’s fines as well, lifting total payments to nearly 16.8 billion rubles ($207.7 million), he said.

Across the full bankruptcy process, more than 18.8 billion rubles ($232.5 million) has flowed into the estate of OOO Google, Talyarovsky said.

Remaining funds covered current claims from the Federal Tax Service, back wages owed to former staff and other obligations, he said. More than 400 million rubles ($5 million) went to workers.

Google’s outstanding administrative fines in Russia have ballooned to 2 undecillion rubles and are still climbing because of late payment. That total surpasses the entire world’s GDP, which stood at about $106 trillion in 2023, according to the World Bank.

The figure traces back to a dispute that began in 2020, when Google started racking up daily penalties of 100,000 rubles ($1,000) after losing court cases over its blocking of certain Russian YouTube channels. The penalty doubled every week.

After the Russia-Ukraine conflict began in 2022, YouTube blocked additional Russian channels, and the number of claimants grew to 17 channels.

Google has also been fined repeatedly for failing to comply with Russian law.
