Herzog Calls for Political Compromise to Prevent Another Israeli Election

Date:

(MENAFN) Israeli President Isaac Herzog called on political parties Wednesday to make every possible effort to prevent another election, after preliminary results showed that neither of the two main political blocs had secured a parliamentary majority.

“Everything must be done, especially after yesterday, to avoid repeating another election,” Herzog told reporters, according to reports from Israeli public broadcasting.

Herzog said he would start consultations with parliamentary factions next week, once the Central Elections Committee delivers the official election results.

“I expect everyone who comes here to come with an open mind,” Herzog said.

He explained that he would hear from each faction, raise questions and conduct discussions before selecting a lawmaker to receive the mandate to form the next government.

Under Israel’s Basic Law governing the formation of a government, the president is required to consult parliamentary factions and appoint a member of the Knesset to form a government within seven days of the official publication of the election results.

The designated candidate is given 28 days to assemble a government, with extensions potentially adding up to another 14 days.

Should the initial candidate fail to form a government, Herzog can assign the task to another lawmaker. At a subsequent stage, a minimum of 61 members of the Knesset may nominate a candidate to attempt to form a government.
