Türkiye Advances Mecca Joint Defense Pact with Saudi Arabia, Pakistan
(MENAFN) Türkiye’s parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee has endorsed legislation to ratify the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement between Türkiye, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan.
The decision followed discussions in which Deputy Foreign Minister Levent Gumrukcu responded to lawmakers’ questions about the pact and its objectives.
Addressing the committee, Gumrukcu said the agreement was designed to enhance regional security by promoting cooperation and a shared approach to defense.
“The Mecca agreement is not only an extension of the special friendly relations between the three countries, but also a concrete product of the regional ownership increasingly needed in our region,” Gumrukcu said.
He noted that the agreement was signed in Mecca on Aug. 7 by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
According to Gumrukcu, Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have already completed their respective national ratification processes and delivered the necessary official notifications.
He described the pact as an initial move toward creating a regional security framework centered on joint efforts and collective defense. He added that the three nations intend to take a more active role in tackling regional challenges instead of relying on external parties to provide solutions.
