Oleshky Ceasefire Tests Prospects for Broader Russia-Ukraine Peace
(MENAFN) A temporary truce has come into effect in the Russian-controlled Ukrainian city of Oleshky to facilitate humanitarian assistance and the evacuation of civilians, although doubts remain over whether the arrangement can be maintained.
The ceasefire, announced by US first lady Melania Trump, began on Tuesday and is being viewed as a potential indicator of whether wider efforts led by Washington to end the Russia-Ukraine war can make progress.
Eugene Chausovsky, senior director at the New Lines Institute, said a truce that remains in place for more than a “few days” could demonstrate that Moscow and Kyiv are prepared to explore similar localized agreements in other parts of the conflict zone.
However, if the arrangement collapses, it could reinforce the existing "status quo" and highlight the deep mistrust that continues to undermine efforts to reach a broader settlement, according to Chausovsky.

The temporary agreement comes as Russia, Ukraine and the United States prepare for trilateral peace negotiations expected during the first half of November. Chausovsky said a successful implementation of the truce “could breathe new life” into the forthcoming negotiations, potentially influencing the wider trajectory of the war.
“It is possible that this localized ceasefire in Oleshky could serve as a significant test for broader US-mediated ceasefire arrangements to be put into place between Ukraine and Russia,” he said.
The outcome of the local arrangement could therefore offer an indication of whether limited humanitarian agreements can help create conditions for more comprehensive ceasefire efforts, although a lasting peace would depend on broader progress between the two sides.
