Erdogan Calls for Respect for Türkiye-Libya Maritime Cooperation

Date:

(MENAFN) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged countries seeking to sideline Türkiye in the Eastern Mediterranean to recognize the “joint will” shared by Ankara and Tripoli.

"I would like to remind once again those who seek to exclude Türkiye from the Eastern Mediterranean that we expect them to respect the joint will of our country and Libya," Erdogan said Monday after a Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Complex in Ankara.

He stressed that Türkiye does not intend to compete against other countries in the region, emphasizing that its priority is to safeguard its maritime jurisdiction rights and national interests.

"We are not, so to speak, trying to score against anyone in the Eastern Mediterranean. We are only concerned with protecting our rights and interests regarding maritime jurisdiction areas," he said.

Erdogan's comments followed the approval by Libya's eastern-based House of Representatives of the 2019 maritime jurisdiction agreement between Türkiye and Libya.

He reiterated Ankara's support for settling disagreements peacefully through dialogue among all coastal states, adding that he expects every party, particularly the European Union, to adopt a similarly constructive stance.
