Russian Parliament Speaker Meets Modi to Strengthen Bilateral Ties
(MENAFN) Russian State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Monday during the BRICS Parliamentary Forum.
Volodin is visiting India on his first overseas working trip since the newly elected State Duma convened in late September. He is heading Russia’s delegation at the forum, which continues through Tuesday.
During the meeting, Volodin highlighted the strength of relations between Moscow and New Delhi.
“It is precisely this model of cooperation, based on respect and the absence of double standards, that Russia and India have developed under the leadership of the two countries’ leaders,” he said in a statement.
The forum is taking place in the Indian capital as India holds the BRICS chairmanship this year.
Russia and India describe their relationship as a “special and privileged strategic partnership.” Both countries have also set a target of increasing bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2030, up from nearly $70 billion in the 2024-25 fiscal year.
Russia accounted for a record 51% of India’s crude oil imports in July.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Modi met in New Delhi in September, ahead of the BRICS summit, to discuss cooperation in trade, energy and defense.
Putin has also highlighted preparations for the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries next year.
BRICS was initially established by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The group has since expanded to include 11 member countries.
