Chris Brown Gets Suspended Prison Term Over London Club Attack

Date:

(MENAFN) US singer Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, over a violent clash at a nightclub in London’s Mayfair district on Feb. 19, 2023.

Brown, 37, admitted a charge of affray in July. Music producer Abe Diaw suffered head and knee injuries in the incident and required hospital treatment.

Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage showed Brown striking Diaw on the head with a glass bottle.

Delivering his sentencing remarks on Monday, Judge Tony Baumgartner characterized the repeated use of the bottle as “plainly dangerous.” He acknowledged that the episode was brief but said it was also “intense.”

Earlier, Brown’s defense lawyers had described the incident as “ugly and unattractive,” while arguing that it was also “very short-lived.”

Under UK law, affray is a public order offense committed when a person uses or threatens violence in public. To qualify, the fight or threat must be frightening enough to make an average, ordinary bystander fear for their own safety.

Brown’s vocal coach, 40-year-old Florida rapper Omololu Akinlolu, also pleaded guilty to affray and is being sentenced in connection with the case.
