Bulgaria Election: Yotova Edges Gyurov in Tight Exit Poll Race
(MENAFN) Incumbent Iliana Yotova finished first in Bulgaria’s presidential election on Sunday, but only narrowly ahead of former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov, according to exit polls.
Data from polling firm Trend, carried by a national news agency, gave Yotova 36.5% of the vote and Gyurov 32.4%. The margin between the two front-runners was tighter than pre-election surveys had forecast.
The numbers point to a tightly fought contest, with the result hinging on the official count.
To win outright in the first round, a candidate must take more than 50% of valid ballots, and turnout must top 50% of registered voters. If neither condition is met, the two top finishers will meet in a runoff on Sunday, Nov. 1.
