Serbia Votes: Turnout Surges to 67.6 Percent Amid Irregularity Claims

Date:

(MENAFN) Serbia’s polls shut at 8 pm local time on Sunday, ending snap parliamentary elections defined by heavy turnout and reports of voting irregularities.

Turnout hit 67.6% as of 7 pm, based on estimates from polling agency Ipsos and the Center for Free Elections and Democracy (CeSID). That is already 8.83 percentage points above the 58.77% final turnout in the December 2023 parliamentary vote, a sharp jump in participation. The figure is not final, and the definitive number will come only after every ballot is counted. First preliminary results are expected before midnight.

What was at stake
Of the roughly 6.45 million registered voters, each could back one of 18 electoral lists competing for seats in the 250-member National Assembly. Nine of those lists represent national minorities. Another 102,147 voters were registered to cast ballots abroad, at 93 polling stations in 37 countries.

Lists must clear a 3% threshold to enter parliament, though minority lists are exempt. Seats are divided under the D’Hondt proportional system, which assigns mandates in line with each qualifying list’s share of the vote.
