Houthis Claim Missile Barrage on Riyadh Airport as Flights Resume

Date:

(MENAFN) Yemen’s Houthi group said on Sunday it fired dozens of ballistic missiles in three separate operations against Riyadh’s main airport and two Saudi military bases, striking just as the airport reopened in part after a roughly two-week shutdown.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree said in a statement that the first operation hit King Khalid International Airport in the Saudi capital and claimed it “achieved its objective.”

The second operation, he said, went after aircraft parking areas, ammunition depots, drone control centers and other facilities at King Khalid Air Base in Khamis Mushait, in southern Saudi Arabia.

Saree claimed a third operation struck a Border Guard naval base in Jizan, in the southwest, causing deaths and injuries. He offered no casualty figures or other details.

He cautioned airlines, airport staff and passengers to stay away from King Khalid International Airport, which he described as “unsafe,” and vowed the group would keep hitting targets deep inside Saudi territory.

Saudi authorities did not immediately respond to the Houthi claims.

The announcement came as flights partially resumed at the airport on Sunday, about two weeks after operations were halted following an earlier Houthi attack. A Saudi state broadcaster reported that domestic flights restarted at Terminal 1, while Terminal 2 began handling international services run by national carriers.

Saudi authorities have yet to announce a full return to normal operations at the airport.
