Mbappe Double Stuns Barcelona: Real Madrid Win Clasico 2-1
(MENAFN) Kylian Mbappe struck twice, including an 87th-minute winner, to give Real Madrid a 2-1 victory over Barcelona at Camp Nou on Sunday in La Liga’s showpiece fixture.
The contest opened cautiously. Anthony Gordon carved out Barcelona’s first real chance, but neither side pressed hard in the early stages.
Madrid broke through four minutes before the interval. A low delivery from Yan Diomande found Mbappe inside the box, and a desperate clearance attempt by Barcelona defender Gerard Martin hit the French forward and looped into the net. Madrid finished the half on top: Mbappe hit the post, and Diomande narrowly missed.
Barcelona answered 16 minutes after the restart. Captain Raphinha took a pass from Pedri and drove the ball between the legs of Jude Bellingham and into the far corner.
Martin, who had put Madrid ahead by accident, almost redeemed himself soon after, but Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin denied him with a superb one-handed stop. Lunin was in goal because Thibaut Courtois was ruled out with illness.
With a draw looking inevitable, Bellingham sparked the decisive move with a moment of midfield skill. Substitute Eduardo Camavinga drove forward and squared the ball for Mbappe, who slotted into an empty net.
The result keeps Barcelona top of the table on 25 points, two clear of Atletico Madrid and three ahead of Real Madrid. Barcelona’s defeat also ended their bid to break the record for consecutive wins to open a Spanish top-flight season. Hansi Flick’s side could not pass the nine-win mark Real Madrid set in 1968-69.
The win also pushes Madrid ahead in the all-time Clasico tally. The sides had been level at 106 wins each, with 52 draws, before kickoff. Madrid now lead the fixture by a single win and have scored 446 goals in it, against Barcelona’s 442.
