Vucic Concedes Defeat as Serbia’s Student-Backed Opposition Leads Election

Date:

(MENAFN) Serbia’s student-supported opposition was projected to win a majority in parliament following Sunday’s snap election, as former President Aleksandar Vucic acknowledged defeat and thousands of people gathered in cities across the country to celebrate the projected outcome.

The “Students Win” electoral list was forecast to take 139 seats in the 250-member National Assembly, ahead of the 104 seats projected for Vucic’s “United Serbia” coalition. The estimates, released by polling agency Ipsos and the Center for Free Elections and Democracy (CeSID), were based on around 60% of the processed sample.

According to the projections, the student-backed list had surpassed the threshold needed to control parliament, which stands at 126 seats.

The Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS), headed by Ivica Dacic, was projected to receive less than the 3% required to enter parliament, raising the possibility that the party could lose its legislative representation for the first time in more than 30 years.

Dacic’s “Factor of Stability” coalition was estimated to have won 2.3% of the vote.

The Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians was forecast to gain three parliamentary seats, while the Albanian Coalition was expected to obtain two.

Meanwhile, the electoral lists led by Rasim Ljajic and the Party of Democratic Action of Sandzak (SDA Sandzaka) were each projected to win one seat.
