PKK-Linked Group in Iraq’s Sinjar to Disarm, Join Iraqi Army

Date:

(MENAFN) A group linked to the PKK in Iraq's Sinjar region will surrender its weapons and integrate into the Iraqi army under the supervision of Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi, an Iraqi official said Monday.

The group, known as the Sinjar Resistance Units (YBS), is affiliated with the PKK, which is designated as a terrorist organization.

Sabah al-Numan, the Iraqi prime minister's military spokesman, said arrangements to reorganize the group's military relationship with Iraqi security forces would begin Monday, according to an official statement.

He explained that members of the group would be incorporated into Iraq's security institutions.

The process would also transfer responsibility for security on Sinjar Mountain to the appropriate federal government authorities, al-Numan said.

He added that the measure reflects the government's policy of ensuring all weapons remain under state control.

The implementation of the plan would usher in a new phase of security arrangements in the Sinjar district, he said.

Al-Numan also stressed that Iraq's Constitution prohibits the establishment of armed groups operating outside the country's official military forces.
