EOK Chief Resigns as Greek Sports Corruption Probe Continues
(MENAFN) Vangelis Liolios stepped down as president of the Hellenic Basketball Federation (EOK) on Sunday amid an ongoing investigation into alleged match-fixing, bribery and breaches of sports laws, according to reports.
During an emergency meeting, the federation's board unanimously selected Angelos Papanikolaou to take over the presidency.
Liolios was one of six individuals arrested on Wednesday in connection with the investigation into suspected misconduct in Greek basketball.
He announced his resignation while appearing before an investigating magistrate, explaining that he wanted the legal proceedings to continue without interference and to give Greek basketball an opportunity to move forward.
During testimony lasting around three and a half hours, Liolios rejected the allegations against him.
He reiterated that stepping down would help prevent the ongoing judicial process from hindering the development of Greek basketball.
Earlier on Sunday, the federation declared that it remained in "a state of absolute and constant alert" as it followed developments closely, adding that it would take the necessary institutional measures.
Papanikolaou had previously competed against Liolios in the federation's 2021 presidential election, finishing third behind former basketball player Panagiotis Fasoulas and Liolios.
