Crypto Market Stability Masks Wider Altcoin Weakness
(MENAFN- Daily Forex) A market can appear steady in aggregate while most assets within it are moving lower. When Bitcoin changes little and retains its share of total value, weakness across a broader field does not always move the headline number much.Top Regulated Brokers1 Get Started 74% of retail CFD accounts lose money That is the crypto market's setup after Saturday's completed session left total capitalization almost unchanged. The flat headline did not reverse the week's weak participation. Bitcoin remained comparatively stable, BNB and PEPE held narrow pockets of strength, and AVAX showed how much pressure still sits beneath the largest names Market Capitalisation Hides a Wider DeclineThat gap appears in CoinMarketCap's public data snapshot, which puts the total capitalization at $2.704 trillion at the time of writing, flat over the prior 24 hours. A cap-weighted reconstruction of rolling seven-day token returns showed a decline of approximately 0.95%.AdvertisementBy contrast, breadth remained much weaker than the headline. Across the top 100 assets, 25 had positive rolling seven-day returns and 75 were negative. A cleaned screen of 39 established top 50 names, after removing stablecoins, wrapped tokens, staked derivatives, and synthetic duplicates, showed 10 positive and 29 negative. Its median return was -2.71%, while its cap-weighted return was -1.00%.Meanwhile, Bitcoin dominance stood at 60.07%, while Ethereum dominance slipped to 10.67%. Bitcoin holding more than three-fifths of market value alongside 75 negative readings out of 100 does not support a broad rotation into altcoins. It describes a market where relative strength remains concentrated. The result was an uneven distribution across sectors. The seven-member large-layer-1 basket had a median rolling loss of -2.15%. The DeFi and oracle basket was weaker at -5.88%. Privacy assets moved the other way, with Monero (XMR) and Zcash (ZEC) producing a two-member midpoint of +4.25%. Those exceptions show some remaining risk appetite. They are too narrow to describe the market as healthy Holds Steadier Than the Wider Crypto MarketBTC Holds Near $80K While Trading Below Key AveragesAt the time of writing, CoinMarketCap showed Bitcoin at $80,770 with a rolling seven-day return of -1.09% and reported 24-hour volume of $20.67 billion. TradingView's Coinbase feed showed $80,800, a week-to-date return of -0.72%, a 20-day simple moving average of $82,289, and a 50-day average of $81,816.BTC/USD 1-day chart. Source: TradingViewThe completed Coinbase candles from October 16 through October 24 opened at $82,131 and ended at $80,770, a fixed-window loss of 1.66%. The range extended from $79,107 to $84,856. Bitcoin finished below both moving averages, but its loss remained smaller than the typical decline in the established-asset screen. That relative stability is consistent with total capitalization staying close to flat even though breadth remained negative Stands Out as Layer-One Assets Remain Under PressureCoinMarketCap showed BNB at $744.60, up 3.39% over the rolling seven-day window, with reported 24-hour volume of $1.35 billion. TradingView's Coinbase feed showed $743.24, a week-to-date gain of 3.66%, a 20-day average of $739.73, and a 50-day average of $749.81.BNB/USD 1-day chart. BNB has now moved back above the 20-day average but remains below the 50-day. It was the only positive member of the seven-asset large-layer-1 basket, separating it from ETH, SOL, ADA, TRX, AVAX, and SUI's Rally Remains Isolated Within the Meme SectorCoinMarketCap showed PEPE at $0.000004483 with a rolling seven-day gain of 15.63% and reported 24-hour volume of $382.9 million. TradingView's Coinbase feed showed $0.00000445, a week-to-date gain of 15.28%, a 20-day average of $0.00000419, and a 50-day average of $0.00000407.PEPE/USD 1-day chart. Source: TradingViewThe completed Coinbase window opened at $0.00000408 and closed at $0.00000450, a gain of 10.29%. It traded between $0.00000377 and $0.00000511. Both moving averages remained below the current price, but the comparison with other established meme assets shows how isolated the move was. DOGE lost 2.10% over the rolling week and SHIB lost 0.81%, leaving the three-member basket's median at -0.81%. PEPE was the strongest of the four selected pairs, yet its peers did not confirm the move Extends the Weakness Across Major Layer-One TokensCoinMarketCap showed AVAX at $8.9738, down 8.43% over seven days, with reported 24-hour volume of $316.7 million. TradingView's Coinbase feed showed $8.958, a week-to-date loss of 8.12%, a 20-day average of $9.969, and a 50-day average of $9.674.AVAX/USD 1-day chart. Source: TradingViewThe completed Coinbase window opened at $10.022 and closed at $8.981, a decline of 10.39%, with a range of $8.663 to $10.507. AVAX ended below both moving averages and carried the deepest rolling loss in the large-layer-1 basket. ADA followed at -5.68% and SUI at -4.69%. The contrast with BNB is the point: assets in the same broad category finished the week with sharply different outcomes, while the group overall remained weak Inflows Fade as the Week Draws to a CloseThe week's ETF total looks more encouraging than the way it finished. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted $301.2 million in net inflows, according to Farside, but that balance survived a substantial reversal. About $1.07 billion arrived during the first three sessions before $773.5 million left over the final two. Buyers provided support across the week, then gave back much of that ground heading into the weekend. That makes the return of U.S. trading worth watching. Another positive weekly total would be more persuasive if buying continued into the later sessions, rather than leaving Bitcoin dependent on a strong start. With BTC below its 20-day and 50-day moving averages, renewed ETF inflows would give its attempt to recover those levels a firmer demand backdrop. The stablecoin market offered little encouragement for a broader rebound. DeFiLlama's USD-pegged supply fell $2.03 billion over seven days to $302.62 billion, a decline of 0.67%. Alongside losses across most major altcoins, that contraction leaves me looking for evidence that the market can support more than a handful of winners. PEPE's rally shows traders are still willing to speculate, but the weakness in DOGE and SHIB makes it difficult to read that enthusiasm as a wider appetite for risk Would Signal a More Durable Crypto Market RecoveryBitcoin holding around $80,000 could give the weaker parts of the market time to recover. The useful development would be ETH, SOL and other large layer-1 names joining BNB in positive territory, followed by improvement across the DeFi names that suffered larger losses. That would give the rebound more depth than another advance in PEPE or the privacy coins.I would watch whether that improvement lasts as Bitcoin approaches its moving averages. Altcoins gaining while BTC holds steady would point toward a healthier distribution of demand. Bitcoin dominance falling because BTC itself is selling off would offer much less encouragement. The risk is that the current leaders weaken before the laggards recover. BNB still has its 50-day average overhead, while Bitcoin has yet to regain either of its key averages. The next week opens with ETF buyers having retreated and most assets still nursing losses.
