Brazil Records Election Violations During Presidential Runoff

Date:

(MENAFN) Brazilian authorities reported 89 election-related offenses nationwide on Sunday as voters took part in the presidential runoff, according to a preliminary security assessment issued by the Justice and Public Security Ministry.

Initial figures from security agencies showed that nine people were apprehended at the scene, 16 incident reports were registered, and another 16 individuals were taken into custody.

Authorities also set up two police checkpoints, confiscated two vehicles, and seized one item of illegal campaign material.

At a press briefing in Brasilia, National Secretary of Penal Policies Andre Garcia described the security measures being carried out across the country during election day.

“The main issue is illegal campaigning, which, unfortunately, is very common during this period,” Garcia said. “We are monitoring a number of areas we consider sensitive and conducting specific operations within the prison system.”

The latest figures come amid increased legal scrutiny of Brazil's electoral process over the past year. The Federal Police reported that authorities launched more than 1,600 formal investigations into electoral offenses during 2026.
