(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) More than 200 Sri Lankan export companies participated in a webinar on European Union packaging requirements on 14 October, according to Sri Lanka's Embassy in Belgium.

The embassy organised the session with the Department of Commerce, the Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Ministry and the EU-funded AGRINFO programme implemented by COLEAD.

The programme examined the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation and its implications for products entering the European market.

COLEAD policy and regulations expert Axelle Rupert led the technical session.

Topics included packaging design, composition, waste prevention and management, alongside restrictions concerning per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS.

Participants also discussed a separate EU regulation addressing bisphenol A and other hazardous bisphenols in certain food-contact materials.

The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation began applying on a phased basis from 12 August 2026. Different obligations have separate implementation dates.

The European Commission states that the framework covers the packaging lifecycle and includes restrictions on PFAS above specified limits in food-contact packaging. Environmen

The webinar identified implications for Sri Lankan tea, spices, seafood, processed food, beverages and consumer goods, as well as manufacturers supplying packaging to exporters.

Officials encouraged businesses to assess their packaging requirements, identify possible compliance challenges and prepare for the relevant obligations.

Director General of Commerce Somasena Mahadiulwewa, Additional Secretary S.W.C. Jayamini and Minister Commercial Thavishya Mullegamgoda delivered introductory remarks.

Department of Commerce Director Charitha Yattogoda moderated the session.

A question-and-answer segment allowed participants to raise practical issues concerning exports and packaging.

The programme formed part of institutional efforts to provide exporters with information on changing EU market requirements.
