Bulgaria’s Yotova Edges Ahead of Gyurov in Presidential Election Exit Polls
(MENAFN) Incumbent Bulgarian President Iliana Yotova took the lead in Sunday's presidential election, narrowly ahead of former caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gyurov, according to exit polls.
Yotova received 36.5% of the vote, compared with 32.4% for Gyurov, based on figures published by polling agency Trend and reported by a Bulgarian news agency.
The difference between the two leading candidates was tighter than opinion polls had predicted before the vote.
The exit poll figures point to a competitive contest, with the final result dependent on the official vote count.
Under Bulgaria's electoral rules, a candidate must obtain more than 50% of valid ballots, with turnout exceeding 50% of registered voters, to secure victory in the first round.
If these conditions are not met, the two candidates with the highest vote totals will face each other in a runoff scheduled for next Sunday, Nov. 1.
