Venezuelan Opposition Leader Machado Returns Home After Months Abroad
(MENAFN) Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado returned to her home country on Sunday after spending several months in exile in Panama.
“I am here. With you,” Machado posted on the US social media platform X, confirming her return after at least seven reported attempts to enter Venezuela had been prevented.
Opposition figure Edmundo Gonzalez welcomed her arrival, writing on X that "our sovereign voice returns with her to lead and guide this process". He also pledged to join Machado in Venezuela soon to advance a political transition.
David Smolansky, a senior adviser to Machado, described her return as "a major step toward a democratic transition and free, fair, and verifiable presidential elections in the near future."
"We thank President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the US Government, Congress, and allied governments for their continued leadership and support," he said in a statement.
When asked about Machado's return, US President Donald Trump said he had not been informed of it, while adding: "I hope she's safe."
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the circumstances that made Machado's safe return possible were the "direct result of the US supported reconciliation talks". He claimed the discussions had secured the release of "hundreds of political prisoners" and enabled exiled political figures to return to Venezuela.
