Barcelona Riots Lead to Mass Arrests, Widespread Property Damage
(MENAFN) Spanish authorities arrested at least 128 people after violent unrest broke out in central Barcelona on Saturday, with minors accounting for more than half of those detained, according to reports.
The clashes left 14 police officers injured, including four who suffered serious injuries. A municipal police officer was also hurt during the incidents.
Authorities confirmed that 72 of the 128 detainees were underage. Police also identified approximately 450 people as part of efforts to control the unrest.
The violence began near Plaça Catalunya after around 500 young people assembled for a protest organized through social media. An anonymous online platform had promoted demonstrations in several major Spanish cities to demand improvements in educational conditions.
The gathering was publicized primarily on TikTok and messaging services such as Telegram and WhatsApp.
According to authorities, the demonstration escalated into violent confrontations, with participants setting fire to 31 rubbish bins, erecting barricades and hurling objects at riot police.
At least 23 businesses were vandalized or looted, while vehicles and public street furniture also sustained damage.
Barcelona City Council estimated that repairing damaged public street furniture alone would cost at least €36,000 ($40,330).
