Ilana Savdie And Chaïm Soutine Works On View In New York

Date:

(MENAFN- USA Art News) A pairing of works by Jewish Belarusian artist Chaïm Soutine and Colombian-American artist Ilana Savdie is currently on view at a gallery in New York City. The exhibition presents Savdie's surgical dissections alongside Soutine's depictions of drying carcasses.

Soutine, who relocated to Paris two years before the start of World War I and sought refuge during the Nazi occupation in 1940, infused his early paintings with an intense energy that continues to resonate. His circa 1925 oil on canvas,“Hanging Turkey,” transforms an ordinary scene into a vivid portrayal of torment, evoking his admiration for El Greco. The plucked turkey in the painting appears like a decapitated angel, with its beak agape as if in agony, even in death.
