ATCAB Celebrates Air Traffic Controller Day In Dhaka

(MENAFN- Bangladesh Monitor) Dhaka: The Air Traffic Controllers Association of Bangladesh (ATCAB) celebrated International Air Traffic Controller Day on October 20 at a function held in the capital, expressing solidarity with air traffic controllers in 137 countries and recognizing the profession's vital role in aviation safety.

The event brought together air traffic controllers and aviation stakeholders to discuss the well-being and professional dedication of controllers, alongside the economic potential of Bangladesh's airspace.

ATCAB General Secretary ATM Nazrul Islam delivered the welcome address, noting that air traffic controllers safeguard every flight through expertise, vigilance, and timely decision-making, even though their work largely goes unnoticed by the public.

He pointed to air navigation and overflight services as a significant, if often overlooked, source of national revenue, with air traffic controllers among the key contributors. He also called for studying whether Bangladesh's Flight Information Region (FIR) and Air Traffic Services responsibilities over the Bay of Bengal could be expanded or reconfigured.

Nazrul added that extending air navigation services to suitable areas near Bangladesh's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) could create new opportunities for the country's airspace economy.

Shafiqul Islam, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Aero Versatilo Group, and Air Commodore Noor-E-Alam, Member (Air Traffic Management) at the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), attended as special guests.

Air Commodore Noor-E-Alam said work to expand Bangladesh's FIR over its EEZ was already underway. He said the move, once implemented, would strengthen the country's airspace management and boost the economic value of its air navigation services. He also underscored the importance of aviation safety in the profession.

Several air traffic controllers shared their professional experiences and reflections during the event. Their remarks touched on the challenges of the profession, the responsibilities they carry out daily, and their tireless efforts to maintain the safety of the skies.

In closing remarks, ATCAB President MA Akkas thanked participants, sponsors, and media representatives for their support. He stressed the need to address occupational health risks, improve shift management, ensure adequate rest, and provide regular training for air traffic controllers.

Akkas said that building a skilled, healthy, and well-trained workforce, alongside modern technology and infrastructure, remains essential to safe aviation operations.

The program concluded with the launch of ATCAB's first magazine, "Horizons and Beyond," followed by a cake-cutting ceremony and cultural performances.

The association said the observance was aimed at recognizing air traffic controllers' contributions while drawing attention to their well-being, career growth, and the broader goal of ensuring safe and efficient use of Bangladesh's airspace.
