New Zealand Raises Volcanic Alert as White Island Releases Ash

Date:

(MENAFN) New Zealand has increased its volcanic alert level following continued ash emissions from White Island, also known as Whakaari, as monitoring agencies track activity at the active volcano.

Earth Sciences New Zealand said the latest activity is not expected to pose a threat to the country's mainland, although residents could notice a sulphur smell and experience light ash fall, according to reports. Authorities have also raised the aviation color code to orange, or Level III, to reflect the ongoing volcanic activity.

Whakaari is an active andesite stratovolcano located approximately 48 kilometers (29.8 miles) off the eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island. Its offshore location means that current activity is being closely monitored for potential effects on aviation and surrounding areas.

In its assessment, Earth Sciences New Zealand reported visible volcanic ash around the active vent inside the Main Crater. A small quantity of ash was also being carried upward in a column of steam and gas rising from the vent.

“A blanket of volcanic ash could be seen around the active vent in the Main Crater, and a small amount was being carried upwards in a column of steam and gas. The discharge was weak, with no evidence that any explosive eruption had occurred,” Earth Sciences New Zealand said.

Scientists indicated that the emissions could persist for an extended period, warning that the activity “may continue for weeks.” Despite the possibility of continued ash release, officials stressed that the likelihood of substantial effects reaching the mainland remains low.

The agency reiterated that any “significant impact to the mainland remains very unlikely,” while noting that a considerable escalation in volcanic activity would be necessary to increase that risk.

Monitoring efforts are continuing as authorities assess changes in the volcano's behavior. The elevated aviation alert reflects the need to remain cautious while ash and gas emissions persist, although officials have not reported evidence of an explosive eruption in the latest activity.
