Ryanair Chief Urges EU Levy on US, Chinese Airlines

Date:

(MENAFN) Ryanair Chief Executive Michael O’Leary has called on the European Union to introduce additional charges for American and Chinese airlines operating in Europe, arguing that European carriers face unequal regulatory requirements, according to reports published Tuesday.

O’Leary also criticized European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, describing her as “useless” over what he considers the bloc’s failure to strengthen its economic competitiveness.

He argued that European airlines face environmental fees and regulatory costs that are not imposed in the same way on certain long-haul services operated by carriers from outside Europe.

“If you're serious about competitiveness, tax the Americans when they land here in Europe,” O’Leary said, urging European policymakers to address what he views as an imbalance in the aviation sector.

His proposal highlights ongoing disagreements over how environmental regulations and operating costs affect competition between European airlines and their international rivals.
