Ukraine Using Satellite Data To Prepare Lawsuits In International Courts Lawyer
"They are already being used for demining, environmental impact assessments, and preparing claims for international courts. This is happening even during the war," Hurova said, commenting on how satellite data could help Ukraine obtain compensation.
According to her, obtaining compensation first requires proving the damage caused by collecting data, assessments, and evidence.
"People may not believe in these courts, but as a lawyer, I understand that if there is a document, an official record, it can help even several years later. To obtain compensation, the damage must first be proven. And that requires data, assessments, and evidence," the lawyer explained.
As an example, she cited the use of satellite data to compare information and verify claims concerning the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant.
"Take the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant – satellite data helped cross-check information and verify statements. This is also part of countering disinformation. Obtaining compensation will be a long process, but there must be a basis to rely on," Hurova said.
The legal expert stressed that Ukraine had already gained unique experience in applying space technologies in the military sphere, during evacuations, in crisis management, and in restoring agricultural land. This expertise could become a source of funding.
