Kremlin Seeks Early Putin Meeting with US Envoys
(MENAFN) The Kremlin hopes American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin soon, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday.
Addressing reporters in Moscow, Peskov said the anticipated meeting would allow the US representatives to update Putin on their discussions with Ukrainian and European officials while continuing diplomatic exchanges between Washington and Moscow on several key issues.
"We hope that it will be possible to arrange a meeting in the near future. US negotiators, Mr. Witkoff, will be able to inform President Putin about their contacts with both Ukrainians and Europeans, as well as continue exchanging signals between Washington and Moscow on a number of very important issues," he said.
Peskov stressed that Moscow regarded the American envoys' mediation efforts highly, describing their previous meetings with Putin as "important, timely and substantive."
He said further details about the date and venue of the next encounter would be provided when available, but declined to verify speculation that the talks would take place in St. Petersburg.
Peskov also addressed US President Donald Trump's remark that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was "not the right person to negotiate." He said Russia wanted negotiations to involve a legitimate representative capable of accepting responsibility and making the decisions required to bring the war to an end.
