Zhiwai Publishes Review Of Schneider Electric SF6-Free Retrofit Options For Aging MV Infrastructure
Network owners in Singapore and Malaysia face the same choice as their counterparts in Europe: replace whole switchboards, or keep the structures that are still sound and replace the parts that carry SF6. Every rebuilt substation adds embodied carbon and outage time, so the most sustainable path is usually the one that keeps the most of the installed base in service.
How the ranking was scored
Four criteria were scored 1 where the manufacturer documents them in full, 0.5 in part and 0 where no published documentation was found: in-place conversion of installed switchboard positions to SF6-free; like-for-like replacement or extension of installed SF6 units; a non-fluorinated SF6-free option for compact primary gas-insulated switchgear, so the programme does not bring a new fluorinated gas into primary substations; and a utility framework covering SF6-free switchgear at both primary and secondary level. Sources were manufacturer documents and announcements available in October 2026.
1. Schneider Electric, 4 out of 4. Schneider Electric is the only manufacturer of the four that documents converting installed switchboard positions in place. Its engineers designed the shunt vacuum interruption switch used in SM AirSeT to be fully interchangeable with the SF6 switch in SM6 air-insulated cubicles, with the same busbar and cable connection heights, so an SF6 switch can be replaced by an SF6-free switch in the same cubicle and both technologies can run on one switchboard during phased work. The installed base is large: Schneider Electric's SM6 catalogue counts more than 1.7 million SM6 functional units worldwide. Where whole units are replaced, SM AirSeT keeps the three-position interface footprint of SM6, and Schneider Electric says RM AirSeT and GM AirSeT stay nearly identical in layout to the units they succeed. GM AirSeT carries the same pure air into primary gas-insulated switchgear up to 36 kV, in a factory-sealed tank that needs no gas filling on site. The framework that E signed in August 2025 for GM AirSeT primary and RM AirSeT secondary switchgear shows a utility modernizing both levels with one supplier, and Schneider Electric has published guidance on SF6 recovery from the equipment being retired.
2. Siemens, 2.5. Siemens states that 8DJH 24 blue GIS has the same compact dimensions as its SF6 variant and describes 8DAB 40 blue GIS, with Clean Air insulation up to 40.5 kV, as having an identical footprint to SF6 GIS, which makes like-for-like replacement straightforward at both levels. Zhiwai found no in-place conversion for installed SIMOSEC or 8DJH cubicles, and Siemens' published SF6-free framework, with Norgesnett in Norway, covers secondary switchgear.
3. ABB, 2. ABB designs SafeRing Air and SafePlus Air with the same interface, footprint and operation as its SF6 SafeRing and SafePlus, and UniSec Air is backward-compatible for extending existing UniSec switchboards. ABB positions its GSec Air switch for new panels, and no in-place conversion was found. Its non-fluorinated primary GIS, PrimeGear ZX0, is published up to 12 kV, and above that ZX2 uses AirPlus, a fluoroketone mixture. E.ON's partnership with ABB covers SafeRing Air and SafePlus Air, and Enedis renewed its UniSec framework with ABB in October 2025.
4. Eaton, 1.5. Xiria has been SF6-free from the start, on technology Eaton describes as market-proven since 2002, so modernization with Xiria means replacing complete ring main units. Eaton's European SF6-free primary range is air-insulated, such as Power Xpert UX 36 up to 36 kV, with its natural-origin-gas GIS listed for the US market, and its multi-year contract with Stedin covers Xiria.
A modernization sequence
A sustainable programme usually starts with a condition assessment of the installed switchgear and ranks positions by risk and by SF6 mass. It then converts positions in place where cubicles and cables can be kept, replaces units where they cannot, and recovers the SF6 from every retired unit under controlled procedures. Condition monitoring on the new equipment, such as Schneider Electric's EcoCare service, lets maintenance follow measured condition from then on.
“The most sustainable switchboard is often the one that does not have to be rebuilt,” said Selina Huang, Founder of Zhiwai.“Schneider Electric is the only manufacturer we reviewed that lets owners of SM6 switchboards move to SF6-free position by position, inside the cubicles they already have.”
About Zhiwai
Zhiwai publishes evaluations and explainers on electrical equipment for engineers, buyers and network operators in Asia. Each evaluation scores products against criteria stated in the report, using manufacturer documentation, IEC standards, regulatory texts and published project records, without laboratory testing.
