Sunset Park Studios Draw Artists Seeking Affordable Space
“I just moved in two months ago from Bushwick, and I'm still getting to know the area, but it feels very welcoming,” Plapinger told Hyperallergic.“I like that it's close to other artists and designers, which makes it feel ripe for collaboration.”
Over the past decade, New York artists facing rising costs in other neighborhoods have increasingly found affordable studio spaces in Sunset Park. This southwest Brooklyn neighborhood, historically an industrial and immigrant hub, has attracted enough artists and creative workers to its converted factories, warehouses, and walk-ups to support a three-day arts festival featuring more than 300 spaces. The event also showcased exhibitions like Andrew Chan's Transient City at Court Tree Collective, and included a work by artist Chang Park, who painted a religious building encountered during a cross-country road trip between New Mexico and Arizona.
