Bluecoat Appoints Emer Grant As First Creative Director Since 1927

Date:

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Liverpool's Bluecoat, England's oldest contemporary art center, has announced the appointment of Emer Grant as its new creative director. This marks the first time the museum has named an individual to this position since its establishment in 1927. Grant joins Bluecoat from Arts Collective Northampton, where she currently serves as artistic director and CEO. She is slated to begin her role at Bluecoat in early 2027, coinciding with the center's upcoming centenary celebrations.

Grant's curatorial experience spans contemporary art, artist-led initiatives, institutional structures, public spaces, and interdisciplinary approaches to cultural production. During her tenure at Arts Collective Northampton, she was instrumental in developing its new venue at 24 Guildhall Road. Her past exhibitions include those by Rose Finn-Kelcey and Mark Wallinger. Under her leadership, the collective fostered collaborations with institutions such as the Hessel Museum of Art in Croton-on-Hudson, New York; the International Student Curatorial Program in New York; Void Gallery in Northern Ireland; and the Netherlands' Stroom den Haag.

Bluecoat CEO Mary Cloake stated that Grant has“worked internationally as a curator, producer and cultural leader, with vast experience in program strategy, project management, and interdisciplinary arts.” Cloake added,“She has a deep understanding of how contemporary art can contribute to civic identity, education, wellbeing, and economic regeneration, all vital experience which will contribute richly to the work we do here in the heart of Liverpool.”

Grant shared her enthusiasm for her new role, saying,“I'm looking forward to making Liverpool my home and getting to know its creative communities. This is a city with immense pride in its culture, people and spirit. I hope to learn from that energy, continue the Bluecoat's tradition of presenting ambitious art, and work collaboratively to shape a vision for its next century.”
