Türkiye Targets Sixth in Global Tourism With USD244.5M Boost
(MENAFN) Türkiye is setting its sights on becoming the world’s sixth-highest earner in tourism revenue, backed by a $244.5 million allocation in the 2027 central government budget draft.
The funding marks a sharp rise from $188.4 million this year. It aligns with the Medium-Term Program (MTP) of Ankara, which sets tourism revenue targets of $70 billion in 2027, $73.5 billion in 2028 and $78.5 billion in 2029.
Türkiye logged record tourism revenue of $65.2 billion last year. However, its initial 2026 target of $68 billion was cut to $65 billion, a revision attributed to continuing conflicts between Russia and Ukraine and in the Middle East.
Citing global tourism revenue data from the World Tourism Organization, the projections show Türkiye climbing from a forecast seventh place this year to sixth in 2027 as revenues grow. Should it hit the $70 billion mark next year and advance in the rankings, later projections place it fifth by 2028.
Since 2017, the country has surged from 15th to seventh in global tourism revenue. Over the same period, it has risen from eighth to fourth in total tourist arrivals.
Türkiye is expected to hold fourth place in total arrivals through 2027-2029. It is also seeking to move up in the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI), improving to 35th place from a projected 36th-place finish last year.
Ankara is targeting 34th place in 2028 and 33rd by 2029, a push intended to reinforce its standing as a leading global travel destination.
