Bernardino D'amico
- Professor, School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment, Edinburgh Napier University
Bernardino D'Amico serves as Professor within the School of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment, ENU. His research works and interests spans across various fields, from structural engineering and sustainable construction to computational design and climate policy, with a distinctive emphasis on the use of computational methods as a unifying thread across these diverse domains. Since completing his PhD on the parametric design, form-finding, and optimisation of timber grids-hells, he has explored how techniques such as dynamic relaxation and performance-driven optimisation can be applied to lightweight and free-form structural systems. This computational perspective later extended into the domain of material efficiency and whole-life environmental assessment, where he contributed methods for probabilistic inference of embodied carbon in building stocks, life cycle assessment (LCA) of construction systems, and parametric modelling of retrofit and design scenarios. More recently, his research has expanded towards data-driven approaches to building decarbonisation and energy policy, where he applies causal machine learning (causal ML) to assess the effectiveness and fairness of policy interventions in the built environment. Through this trajectory, Bernardino has consistently advanced the role of computer based methods as a bridge between engineering design, environmental assessment, and policy analysis. His overarching aim is to develop rigorous, data-driven methods and models that support a resource-efficient, low-carbon, and socially equitable built environment.
