US Backs Saudi Arabia Logistically as Houthi Clashes Escalate

Date:

(MENAFN) Washington is supplying logistical support to Saudi Arabia as fighting with Yemen’s Houthis intensifies, US special envoy Tom Barrack said Tuesday, while dismissing the idea of American troops on the ground in the conflict.

Barrack told the Global Security Forum in Doha, Qatar, that a US ground intervention in the Houthi conflict “appears pointless.” He serves as US ambassador to Türkiye and special presidential envoy for Syria and Iraq.

He said President Donald Trump is backing the kingdom logistically as hostilities between Riyadh and the Houthi group escalate. Barrack also pressed Middle Eastern nations to build regional alliances instead of looking to Washington to solve their problems.

On Iran, the envoy said the United States wants a peaceful agreement as tensions with Tehran persist.

Barrack also cast doubt on decades of American military intervention in the region, arguing that efforts to topple governments have repeatedly failed.

“Every time we try and intervene, change the person or the regime, it seems to have been a mistake,” he said.

Asked whether the US-Israeli war against Iran had been a mistake, Barrack replied: “I don’t know whether it’s a mistake or not.”

He described the situation left by the conflict as “horrible.”

His comments come as the Saudi-led coalition conducts airstrikes on Houthi positions and the group fires missiles and drones at the kingdom.

The regional flare-up has unfolded alongside lingering friction between the US and Iran after their military confrontation, with diplomatic efforts to reach a deal still deadlocked.
