Salah’s 8th Goal Powers Trabzonspor Past Besiktas 2-0
(MENAFN) Mohamed Salah struck his eighth league goal of the campaign on Monday, sealing a commanding 2-0 win for Trabzonspor over Besiktas at Papara Park and closing out Week 8 of the Turkish Super Lig.
Besiktas had the better of the opening exchanges. Andre Onana stopped a close-range header from Olaitan in the 10th minute, and four minutes later Nwaiwu blocked a first-time attempt from Dusan Vlahovic. In the 17th minute, Onana was forced into another save, turning away a deflected shot from outside the area by Vaclav Cerny.
Trabzonspor absorbed the pressure and took the lead in the 21st minute through Ozan Tufan. Ernest Muci burst into the box from the left and drove in a shot from a tight angle. Goalkeeper Alexander Nubel parried it, but only into Tufan’s path, and the midfielder smashed home the rebound on the half-volley.
The hosts came close to extending their lead in the 38th minute. Salah sparked a counterattack and found Muci, whose pass sent Franculino clear, but Nubel stood firm to deny the striker one-on-one.
Besiktas threatened to level three minutes later. Onana pushed away a powerful effort from Leandro Trossard into the path of Murillo, whose follow-up shot struck the woodwork.
Despite holding close to 65% possession, Besiktas could not break through Trabzonspor’s well-organized defense after the break. Trossard sent an effort narrowly wide from the edge of the box in the 70th minute, and Salah punished the visitors a minute later. Aral Simsir floated a pass down the left flank for Franculino, who whipped in a low cross, and the Egyptian forward finished first time from close range.
The strike lifts Salah to eight goals and three assists in eight league appearances, putting him clear at the top of the Super Lig scoring charts.
Trabzonspor kept hunting on the break. In the 82nd minute, Nubel made two straight saves to deny Noah Saviolo and then Salah. Three minutes later, Salah curled a left-footed attempt wide after Muci found him inside the area. Substitute Ilhan Fakili tested Onana in the 87th minute, but Besiktas created nothing more.
The result is Trabzonspor’s fourth consecutive win in all competitions under new head coach Thomas Reis. It moves them up to fourth in the Super Lig with 16 points, while Besiktas slip to fifth with 15.
