Pakistan Army Chief Heads to Iran as US Talks Collapse
(MENAFN) Pakistan’s army chief, Asim Munir, is expected in Iran on Tuesday to discuss Islamabad’s efforts to mediate between Tehran and Washington, Iranian media reported Monday.
Munir is due to meet Iranian officials to address diplomatic efforts to end the conflict between Iran and the US, along with wider regional developments, a semi-official Iranian news agency said.
Islamabad has been the central go-between in the conflict, keeping close contact with both capitals.
In June, the US and Iran signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, which set out a framework for negotiating a final agreement. The talks later fell apart over disputes on security guarantees and freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway vital to global energy supplies and international trade.
