Trump Pushes ‘New America’ Rename, Claims Higher Home Values
(MENAFN) Donald Trump demanded Monday that New Mexico adopt the name “New America,” saying the switch would raise the Southwestern state’s prestige, property values and incomes.
In a post on Truth Social, the president wrote: “New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!”
He followed with: “The name would add great value and prestige to the State! Home Values and Incomes would rise, and you would be even prouder while saluting our beautiful American Flag!”
Trump first floated the idea in September, calling “New America” a more prestigious name for the landlocked state.
The president has no power to rename a state on his own. Changing New Mexico’s name would require an amendment to its Constitution. Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham rejected the proposal last month, when it first surfaced.
The demand is the latest in a string of renaming pushes by Trump. In January 2025, he signed an executive order directing US federal authorities to use “Gulf of America” instead of Gulf of Mexico. In August, he signed another order directing federal agencies to rename Lake Ontario, which borders both the US and Canada, as “Lake America.”
At an Oct. 10 rally in Tennessee, Trump also floated “Trump Ocean” or “Ocean of the Americas” as new names for the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean. At a rally in Georgia on Friday, he claimed he had jokingly asked Google about renaming one of those oceans “Trump Ocean.”
