Saudi-Led Coalition Issues Stark Warning Over Houthi Arms Boats

Date:

(MENAFN) The Saudi-led coalition issued a stark warning Monday to the Houthi group and to boat owners along the coast, saying the use of traditional vessels to move weapons, missiles and military equipment into the country endangers civilians and regional stability.

In a statement, the coalition’s Joint Forces Command said the practice poses a threat to security inside Yemen and well beyond its borders. It urged boat owners to refuse any cooperation with the Houthis in delivering arms and military gear to Yemen’s coastline, cautioning that doing so could put their lives and property in danger.

The statement did not identify any specific smuggling operations or point to any weapons shipments that had been intercepted.

The warning follows the coalition’s release of footage on Friday that it said shows strikes on boats, vehicles and facilities used to funnel weapons to the Houthis in Al Hudaydah province, in western Yemen. The video shows vessels and vehicles under surveillance before strikes hit several sites.

Yemen has been locked in conflict since 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, and a number of provinces. The Saudi-led coalition intervened the following year in support of the internationally recognized government. The latest round of fighting began in July, after a truce brokered by the UN in 2022 collapsed.
