Guterres, Prabowo Discuss Global Issues, Multilateral Cooperation
(MENAFN) United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres held talks with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto on Sunday, focusing on strengthening international cooperation and addressing pressing global challenges.
Following the meeting, Guterres highlighted Indonesia's contribution to international diplomacy and multilateral initiatives in a post on the social media platform X.
"Indonesia is a pillar of multilateralism, a home of enormous cultural diversity, an emerging economy of growing influence, a political & diplomatic bridge-builder — regionally, globally & at the United Nations, and a voice of peace," he wrote.
The discussions covered potential reforms to the international multilateral system, implementation of the UN's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and regional conflicts, including the situation in the occupied Palestinian territory.
Indonesia's presidency said the visit highlighted the role of international partnerships in supporting peace and stability worldwide.
Guterres also commended Indonesia's involvement in climate initiatives and its "innovative" approaches to development financing. He expressed appreciation for Jakarta's continued contributions to United Nations peacekeeping operations.
Indonesian personnel are currently serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which operates along the Lebanese-Israeli border.
Several Indonesian peacekeepers deployed with the mission have sustained casualties in incidents involving Israeli fire near the border, underscoring the security risks facing international personnel in the area.
