Alberta Votes on Path to Leaving Canada: 1.36M Ballots Already in

Date:

(MENAFN) Voting closed Monday in Canada’s western province of Alberta in a high-stakes referendum that could start the province down a road toward leaving the country.

Polls were scheduled to shut at 8 pm local time (0200GMT Tuesday), but some locations stayed open longer because of delayed openings.

Roughly 1.36 million residents had already voted through advance and special balloting, according to Elections Alberta.

The ballot carried 10 questions. The first nine dealt with immigration and constitutional issues.

The last question asked voters whether Alberta should stay in Canada or whether its government should launch the legal process for a second, legally binding referendum on separation.

The vote is nonbinding and does not directly decide whether Alberta leaves Canada.

Elections Alberta said ballots will be counted by hand, starting with the separation question.

Unofficial results are expected within 48 hours of polls closing. Official results are due Oct. 29.
