Yellow Vest Organizers Schedule New Protests Across France
(MENAFN) France’s Yellow Vest movement is preparing another round of demonstrations on October 24 and 31 following recent protests over rising living costs, with organizers seeking to sustain public mobilization ahead of a nationwide trade union campaign in November.
The coordination group behind the October 17 demonstrations announced the upcoming actions on Monday, describing the next round as “Act II.” A map published on its website indicates that dozens of demonstrations are already being planned, according to reports.
Benjamin Ball, who edits the website, said the initial strategy had focused on gathering support for November 5, when a coalition of unions plans to stage strikes and demonstrations across both the public and private sectors.
However, organizers decided to bring forward additional protests after receiving strong calls for further mobilization, he explained.
“We're maintaining momentum for November 5th, but we'll build step by step,” Ball said, describing a series of planned actions beginning on October 24 and continuing on October 31 before the larger mobilization in November.
The CFDT, CGT, FO, Unsa and FSU unions are organizing the November campaign around demands concerning wages, public services, employment and the future of industry.
The latest announcement follows demonstrations held across France on Saturday, some of which were accompanied by violence and looting in several cities.
Ball said the October 17 protests had attracted a substantial increase in participation, although he maintained that the turnout had not yet reached the level organizers wanted.
