France Restricts Public Gatherings After Marseille Unrest

Date:

(MENAFN) French authorities have prohibited public gatherings and demonstrations throughout Marseille following a weekend marked by violence and looting, introducing restrictions intended to prevent further disturbances.

The Bouches-du-Rhone police prefecture announced that the ban would remain in force on Monday between noon and 8 pm local time under an order covering the entire city, according to reports.

The restrictions follow incidents of unrest on October 17 and 18, as officials seek to restore public order and prevent further violence. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez was also expected to visit Marseille on Monday to evaluate the situation.

Meanwhile, authorities in Denain, a town in northern France, have introduced an overnight curfew affecting both adults and minors. Mayor Anne-Lise Dufour-Tonini said the restrictions would run from 9 pm until 6 am each night between October 18 and October 25.

President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday that regional prefects would work alongside mayors to maintain security in urban areas, including by prohibiting specific gatherings where necessary.

The security measures come amid broader public discontent across France. Demonstrations held nationwide on Saturday drew people protesting against the rising cost of living, higher fuel and energy bills, weakening purchasing power and concerns about the quality of public services.
