Spain to Fund University Housing, Strengthens Student Rights

Date:

(MENAFN) Spain is preparing to invest €45 million ($50.4 million) in university accommodation while introducing new protections designed to improve students' rights, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Monday.

Speaking during an event at the Moncloa Palace, Sanchez said the Council of Ministers would approve the funding package on Tuesday alongside a new statute establishing stronger protections for university students.

"Tomorrow, the Council of Ministers will approve a €45 million package to promote university residences," Sanchez said.

The investment will initially support seven projects expected to provide nearly 2,000 additional housing places at public universities throughout Spain, helping expand accommodation options for students pursuing higher education.

Sanchez emphasized that rising housing costs pose a growing obstacle to educational equality, warning that students who cannot afford to live in their chosen university cities risk losing access to academic opportunities.

"When a student cannot afford to live where they would like to study, what happens is that, ultimately, the university ceases to be that engine of prosperity and equal opportunities that we all want it to be," he said.

Alongside the housing initiative, the proposed university student statute is expected to broaden student entitlements, reinforce representation within universities, facilitate mobility and increase access to psychological support services. Both measures are scheduled for consideration by the government on Tuesday.
