Bayeux Tapestry To Get New Display In Normandy Museum
Previously, the 770-pound, 220-foot-long cloth was displayed vertically at the Bayeux Museum, according to Le Monde. The Bayeux Museum is currently closed for renovations and is scheduled to reopen in October 2027. Upon its return to Normandy, the tapestry will be reinstalled on a slanted table.
Catherine Pégard, France's Minister of Culture, stated on X that the change in presentation for the tapestry was“bound to change” and has been“underway for a very long time.” She clarified that the decision was not a result of any damage incurred during its transport to London. The Bayeux Museum has been considering discontinuing the suspension system, which has been used to display the tapestry since the 1980s, for about a decade.
The historic loan agreement, signed in the summer of 2025, has kept fans of the tapestry on high alert. When the millennium-old textile arrived in London in July 2026, France's general director of heritage and architecture confirmed that no damage had occurred. However, two months later, The New York Times reported that conservators had discovered“two new small breaks among its millions of threads, both of which were a few millimeters long.” The Bayeux Tapestry will remain on view in London until July 11, 2027. Tickets for its current exhibition are sold out through the end of the year, with the next release scheduled for Wednesday.
We previously reported:A temporary loan of the Bayeux Tapestry to the British Museum, running through July 11, 2027, should prompt discussions about the climate crisis.
Responding to high demand, the British Museum will extend its hours for the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition, which has drawn nearly 1 million visitors.
