Gowanus Open Studios Celebrates 30Th Anniversary

Date:

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Gowanus Open Studios (GOS) recently held its 30th annual event, featuring over 100 participating sites across the neighborhood. The event showcased the area's creative community and its evolving landscape, transitioning from an industrial past to a future marked by waterfront development.

Landscape artist Elizabeth O'Reilly, who maintains a studio at 543 Union Street and has been in the area since 1992, reflected on the significant changes. She expressed a sense of sadness regarding Gowanus's transformation from an industrial site to a location with luxury high-rises near the canal.

O'Reilly displayed numerous paintings and collages depicting the canal and the neighborhood. Much of her work on view dated from the late 2000s and early 2010s, coinciding with the canal's designation as a Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency and its entry into a second phase of development.

The exhibited works captured the architectural angles of the area and the canal's reflection of them on its surface, documenting familiar street corners before their anticipated changes.
