Patrick Graham, Cathy Wilkes Receive Bacon Awards

Date:

(MENAFN- USA Art News) Irish artist Patrick Graham and Northern Irish artist Cathy Wilkes have been named the first recipients of the Francis Bacon Awards for Irish Visual Arts program. Graham will receive the Francis Bacon Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his impact on Irish painting and contemporary visual art over more than six decades. Wilkes is honored with the Francis Bacon Mid-Career Artist Award for her diverse practice encompassing sculpture, painting, drawing, and installation.

The total prize fund of €40,000 ( $44,800 ) will be divided, with Graham receiving €25,000 and Wilkes receiving €15,000. Both artists are scheduled to receive their awards during the Dublin Gallery Weekend 2026, which will take place from November 5 to 8. As part of the award, Graham and Wilkes will also be invited to present solo exhibitions at Château La Coste in Provence, France. The award program received support from Château La Coste and the law firm Addleshaw Goddard.

An international judging panel selected the recipients, including Emma Goltz, chair of Studio Voltaire in London; Barbara Dawson, director of Hugh Lane Gallery in Dublin; Brian Cass, head of the Hayward Touring Gallery at the Hayward Gallery; writer, critic, and educator Caoimhín Mac Giolla Léith; and Mary McCarthy, director of Crawford Art Gallery in Cork.

The panel commended Graham for his role in the resurgence of figurative painting in the 1980s, noting that his most compelling work combined“visceral renderings of the mortal body with dispersed fragments of plaintive text, confronting cultural trauma, religious repression and existential angst.” Wilkes was praised for her work's“bruised beauty and fragile grace” and her use of“everyday materials.”

To mark the Dublin Gallery Weekend 2026, the podcast“Talk Art,” hosted by Robert Diament and Russell Tovey, will record a live episode at the National Gallery of Ireland on November 7 with Graham. The discussion will focus on his six-decade career and influence on contemporary Irish painting.
