Zohran Mamdani Celebrates Birthday At Studio Museum In Harlem
Simmons is part of the 2026 artist-in-residence cohort, alongside Simonette Quamina and Derriann Pharr. This group is the first to work and exhibit in the museum's recently constructed building. Simmons, known for his work across painting, prints, and drawings, transforms everyday scenes into fantastical dreamscapes. His art blends found and personal imagery with pop culture elements, employing an electrified palette and layered compositions where figures and backgrounds merge.
The Hypnotist is open to various interpretations, possibly depicting a priest captivating a congregation while a car idles outside under a setting sun. The painting's depiction of a loosely sketched, restless crowd likely resonated with Mayor Mamdani, evoking the energy of New York City.
Simmons previously discussed his artistic approach with FAD Magazine in 2022.“Fear and strength tend to be tied to the types of figures I paint, but I hope to explore the 'wh' of it all. I am interested in the many lives or meanings these figures can have depending on the viewer. I like exploring the emotions of the viewer and giving them space to question their own perception,” Simmons stated, adding,“The narrative ambiguity can create a vastness.” Works by Simmons are currently on view in the exhibition“A sustained becoming: Studio Museum Artists in Residence 2026,” which runs through January 3.
