Brilliant Blind & Design Brings Smart, Motorized Window Treatments To Northern Virginia Homes This Winter

FAIRFAX, VA, UNITED STATES, October 19, 2026 /EINPresswire / -- Brilliant Blind & Design, a Fairfax window treatment company that has served Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia for nearly 20 years, is urging Northern Virginia families to check their homes for corded blinds and shades before the holidays, when many households host young children. The company is sharing guidance on identifying hazardous cords and on cordless options, including motorized blinds.

A hazard that is easy to overlook

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says that, on average, about nine children under the age of five die each year from strangulation in window blinds, shades, draperies and other window coverings with cords. The CPSC urges families with young children to install cordless window coverings in every room where children may be present.

Industry standards have tightened in recent years. The voluntary ANSI/WCMA A100.1-2022 standard, which took effect for manufacturers on June 1, 2024, eliminated free-hanging operating cords, free-hanging tilt cords and multiple cord connectors on custom window coverings. Many homes, however, still have older blinds and shades installed years before those changes. Federal rulemaking has also been unsettled: a mandatory CPSC rule for custom window coverings was vacated by a federal appeals court and sent back to the agency for further work.

"Most of the corded blinds we see in homes were installed long before the newer standards," said [Name], [Title] at Brilliant Blind & Design. "Grandparents in particular often have older window coverings and do not realize a visiting toddler could reach the cords. The holidays are a good moment to take ten minutes and check every room."

What families should check

Brilliant Blind & Design recommends a room-by-room review, starting with bedrooms, nurseries and living rooms.

Look for long pull cords. Free-hanging cords that a child could reach, or wrap around a neck, are the main concern.

Check for continuous loops and bead chains. These should be firmly attached to the wall or window frame with a tension device.

Inspect inner cords. On horizontal blinds, the cords running through the slats can be pulled out into a loop if cord stops are missing.

Move furniture away from windows. The CPSC advises moving cribs, beds, furniture and toys away from windows and window covering cords, preferably to another wall.

Shorten or secure cords now. Where replacement is not possible straight away, cords should be made as short as possible and kept out of reach.

Cordless options

Cordless window coverings remove the hazard rather than managing it. Options include spring-loaded cordless shades that are raised and lowered by hand, wand-controlled systems, and motorized blinds and smart blinds.
A motorized shade has a quiet motor built into its headrail and no operating cords at all. It can be controlled by remote, wall switch, smartphone app or voice assistant, and scheduled to open and close on its own. Systems such as Hunter Douglas PowerView and Somfy motorized shades are widely used in homes and can be grouped by room. Motorization is especially practical for tall or hard-to-reach windows, such as those over stairwells and behind furniture.

Winter benefits

Cordless and motorized shades can also help in cold weather. Windows are one of the main places a home loses heat, and shades that close automatically at sunset add a layer between the glass and the room every evening. Cellular shades, whose honeycomb cells trap air, are among the most energy-efficient window treatments and can be paired with motorization so they stay open on sunny days and close in the late afternoon.

Help for local homeowners
Brilliant Blind & Design's consultants can assess existing window coverings during a consultation and explain which can be retrofitted and which should be replaced. Working displays of cordless and motorized systems are available at the company's showroom, 11930U Fair Oaks Mall, Fairfax, VA 22033. Homeowners can call (703) 987-7720 with questions. Renters who notice corded window coverings in a home with young children can raise the issue with their landlord and, in the meantime, shorten and secure cords and move furniture away from windows. Further safety information is available from the CPSC at cpsc.

Frequently asked questions

Are corded blinds dangerous for children?
According to the CPSC, accessible cords on window coverings pose a strangulation risk to young children, and the agency recommends cordless window coverings in homes with children.

Are motorized blinds safer than corded blinds?
Motorized blinds have no operating cords, which removes the cord hazard. They can be controlled by remote, app, wall switch or voice.
