Houthi Attack on Security Training Center Kills Dozens in Southern Yemen

Date:

(MENAFN) More than 53 people were killed and over 200 others wounded Monday in a Houthi attack on a security training center in Yemen’s southern Shabwa province, according to local authorities.

The strike hit the facility while newly recruited members of the internal security forces were undergoing training, the Shabwa governorate said in a statement published on Facebook. The attack caused a large number of casualties among personnel at the center, although further details about the circumstances of the strike were not immediately available.

Local authorities condemned the attack and called for urgent measures to prevent similar incidents. They stressed that expressions of condemnation alone would not be sufficient to address the scale of the casualties, urging the Yemeni government and the Saudi-led coalition to strengthen security arrangements and improve the governorate’s defensive capabilities.

“The scale of this tragedy cannot be met with condemnation alone, but requires urgent military and security measures to prevent such attacks from recurring,” the local authorities stressed.

The Houthis had not immediately issued a response to the accusations or commented on the reported casualties.

The attack comes amid continued fighting between the Houthi movement and forces aligned with Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which receives support from the Saudi-led coalition. The latest incident adds to the security challenges facing government-aligned forces as hostilities continue across parts of the country.

Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since 2014, when the Houthis seized the capital, Sanaa, along with large areas of the country’s north. The fighting has since involved multiple domestic and regional actors, while efforts to resolve the conflict have faced persistent challenges.

The reported deaths and injuries in Shabwa highlight the continuing risks faced by security personnel amid the conflict. Local authorities are calling for stronger defensive measures, while further information about the attack and any subsequent response remains pending.
